Many people all over the world start their day with a cup of coffee to get them going. However, another way to get them ‘going’ is having it inserted in their rectum as an enema. Many people have used an enema to relieve constipation. An enema is a liquid inserted into the rectum. It is done prior to having a medical procedure or to help relieve constipation.

Many substances have been used, rightly or wrongly as an enema. One such liquid is coffee. It is thought to have helpful benefits. However, it can also be dangerous if not used properly or even too often. Let’s take a look at what to know about coffee enemas.

1. Talk To A Doctor First

Obviously, anyone wishing to do this must first speak to a doctor. You should know what to do and how to do it. Someone may have some other health problems and doing this could cause a bigger problem. Rectal tissue is very sensitive. You should never use a hot liquid as an enema. This can burn the delicate tissue and cause damage. Room temperature liquid is much better.

2. The Actual Procedure

You can brew a couple of tablespoons of coffee in distilled water (about a litre). Make sure that there are no grounds left. Let it sit and cool down so that it gains room temperature. Try not to use it even if it is warm. When ready, lie on your left side in order to instil the liquid. It may be a good idea to place towels around. It may also be a good idea if you are near the bathroom.

3. Preparing the Coffee Enema

Use the coffee mixture using an enema system that can be purchased in the drugstore. This can be as simple as a water bottle that has a tubing which can be inserted into the rectum. You may want to lubricate the tip of the tube so it is easier to insert. Use a water-based lubricant.

Use as much of the 1-litre solution but do not force it. Hold this in for about 15 minutes. When the time elapses, you should go to the bathroom. If this is not really successful, you can try again in a few hours.

4. Understanding the Risks

One should not do this too often because of the risk of losing electrolytes. As you know, electrolytes are incredibly important to the body. This should not be jeopardized with frequent repetition. If prolonged diarrhea results, you should consult a doctor. Many doctors may not recommend a coffee enema because the long-term risks aren’t really known. Some of the risks involved are irritation to the intestines, injury and allergic reactions. Loss of electrolytes is also a major concern. All of this can cause major medical problems.

Using a coffee enema for constipation instead of trying to have a normal bowel movement can cause you to be dependent on the enema. This could irritate the intestines and in the future, it may actually make it difficult for you to go naturally. If there is difficulty in going, it would be advisable to see a doctor to address the issue to see if there is some condition that may be treated in other ways.
